NBC Bay Area News: “It’s a method of in vitro fertilization that involves one man and two women, doctors take genetic material from a mom and dad and combine it with healthy mitochondria from another female donor. Mitochondria is a cell’s power source and scientists say it can help save babies from inherited diseases that the mom passes down saving babies from genetic disorders that cause brain damage, heart failure and blindness.”
Dr. Reid: “So if a woman knows that she carries mitochondria that are very sick, and has a risk of carrying children with these very severe diseases, this is an opportunity for her to potentially have healthy children.”
