In a Yahoo! Finance article, Dr. Eduardo Hariton is one of several fertility specialists who discusses the promise and limitations of IVF. Dr. Hariton notes that only about 1 in 4 patients in America who could benefit from IVF actually receive the treatment.

The primary reason is cost. Whereas Denmark and Israel have very high rates of IVF use, with 9% of Danish births being through IVF, many other countries do not. Those two countries prioritize childbirth and the state’s payment for fertility treatments like IVF. These treatments make it possible for a growing number of people worldwide facing infertility to have children of their own. Countries like the United States lag behind in IVF.

But the use of IVF is increasing in the U.S. A few years ago only nine states had laws requiring healthcare insurers to cover some part of IVF treatment. Today 14 states do and more are considering it.
